The students are involved in programmes that aim to utilise some of the special physical and geographical features that exist primarily on The West Coast, but also in other areas of the South Island, e.g. The Marlborough Sounds, Hanmer Springs and Arthur's Pass (involving activities such as camping and snow-skiing) and Christchurch City. While most students live within walking distance of the school, the catchment area currently encompasses Punakaiki to the North, Rotomanu to the East and Arahura to the South, as parents exercise their education choices to be part of the Grey Main School Community. The school is considered by the community as an excellent school. The school has a range of specialist learning opportunities including reading recovery, itinerant teachers of special needs, resource teachers for guidance and learning, extension group tuition, public health nurses and community constables. The school also has a successful gifted and talented programme that aims to extend more able students in areas such as arts, languages, maths and literature, etc.. Special needs students are catered for with Individual Education Plans (IEP) supported by a well resourced Learning Support Department which includes a large number of support staff. The school also employs a qualified school counsellor part-time for both students and staff. The school is well

Read about the Key Competencies here.. Grey Main enjoys healthy BOT (Board of Trustees) and PTA (Parent-Teacher association) relationships and strong community support which is evidenced by the number of voluntary teacher aides, parent helpers on excursions, attendance at assemblies, open Days, galas and other school events. Grey Main views the education process as a partnership between staff, students and school community. In 2008 Grey Main School will develop a new school vision which will reflect our beliefs and values. The junior school facilitates close liaison with pre-school centres and operates an extensive familiarisation programme with parents and children to allow for easy transition to Grey Main. Grey Main staff proactively supports the increasing level of parental expectations, and parents' willingness to play a more active role in promoting their child(ren)'s education. This is actioned by Grey Main's 'open door' policy and programmes such as curriculum update seminars and parent meetings. The school is actively involved with the Woolf Fisher Literacy Initiative and current results have shown above average levels of literacy. |
