MARK COSTELLO
(CHAIR)
Hi there , my name is Mark Costello. It is a great honour to be Chairman for the
Grey Main BoT. I attended Grey Main as a student some time last century and it's
great to still be associated with the school and be part of our children's
learning and development. To be able to work with a professional group of
teachers is very enjoyable and a great boost to my own personal development and
confidence. I have one daughter at Grey Main and my son is now at Greymouth High
School after having an outstanding learning experience at Grey Main. I have been
on the Board since 2004 and have held the Policy and Property portfolios
and have been on several sub-committees. I have thoroughly enjoyed working with
my fellow Board members, school management,, teachers, FOGMS and the school
community and would encourage anyone thinking of nominating themselves to do so.
Thank you.
Mark having a chat with the Prime Minister on his
recent visit to our school.
TONY CONNORS
My name is Tony Connors and I am past Board Chairperson of Grey
Main School. I am a parent of four children, two of whom are currently Grey Main
pupils and two who had their full primary education at Grey Main.
I am in awe of the dedication to education as provided by the senior management
and all the staff at Grey Main. Grey Main is a great learning environment and
positions all children for a great start to their secondary education.
SUE BEECROFT FINDLAY
My name is Sue Beecroft Findlay. I have been a parent at
GM for seven and a half years and enjoy the family friendly atmosphere of the
school. All five of my children have been at Grey Main and I still currently
have four children spread throughout the school. I look after the Health &
Safety Policies which ensure the school runs according to the requirements set
out by the Employment and Education Acts.
PETE HINES
This is my second term on the Grey Main Board of Trustees with my main
role being Treasurer, overseeing the financial management of the school. I am
also on the Property sub-committee.
I see the role of the Board of Trustees to provide advice and direction to the
school and to provide our children with the best opportunities to learn and grow
as young people and be leaders in our community.

VIV LOGIE
My family and I returned to
the West Coast almost three years ago, after spending nearly eight in Kalgoorlie
in Western Australia and the same in Waikouaiti, near Dunedin. We moved back
because Paul, my husband got a job in Reefton with Oceana Gold. Wanting to live
closer to Greymouth we ended up moving onto the land near Stillwater. Then we
needed to look for schools to send our three children, Thomas, Kasey and Reuben.
We chose Grey Main as it offered something for each of them and had plenty of
room for play and a great bunch of teachers. Soon after they started school here
I decided to get involved in school life too. I joined the Board of
Trustees and although a bit daunting to start with I have since found my feet
and love every minute of it. My portfolios include policy development and
personnel and I have just become deputy chair. I am a born and bred West
Coaster and since moving back, after being away for more than 20 years I have
renewed some old friendships and made many more friends -- through the
school family and my job as chief reporter at the Greymouth Star. We , as a
family, lead a very busy life -- sport especially keeps us very busy. My two
oldest children (teenagers) are now at Grey High but I still have a student at
Grey Main. I look forward to working of the board for a few more years -- I
still have things to learn and believe I have plenty to offer.

Education Review Office Reports
LINK TO FULL 2008 REPORT
These are the findings of the Education Review Office’s
latest report on Greymouth Main
School.
Greymouth Main
School, commonly known as Grey Main, caters for students from years 1 to 8 and
is the largest primary school in the area. The
buildings are of a traditional style, maintained to a good standard and set in
spacious grounds. The facilities
cater well for the learning and recreation needs of students. At
the time of the ERO review, the buildings were being repainted as part of the
school’s ten‑year property maintenance plan and a new senior confidence course
had been installed. Remodelling of the administration block is scheduled for the
end of 2008.
The Board of Trustees, the principal and senior managers
provide effective governance, leadership and management. Staff
members are a committed and industrious team. Most
personnel have enjoyed a lengthy association with the school and the local
community, with whom there is a strong partnership. The
Friends of Grey Main School is an active support group and many parents help
daily with school literacy programmes. Interactions
between the different school bodies are positive and mutually respectful. The
school offers a warm and welcoming atmosphere for parents and their children.
Since the 2005 ERO review, the school has continued to
increase its effectiveness in meeting the range of student needs in literacy. Work
with the West Coast literacy development initiatives and in-school professional
learning have incorporated training in the use of assessment tools, data
analysis and evaluation to inform school review. This
ERO review considers progress made by evaluating how well professional learning
has been embedded, and how well assessment information is used within
self review to plan for improved student achievement, including for those who
identify as Māori. In addition, ERO
reviewed aspects of compliance with particular emphasis on student emotional and
physical well-being. No concerns are
identified.
Students at Grey Main have high quality learning
opportunities with appropriate levels of challenge. In
literacy, planning is responsive to the different needs identified from analysis
of assessment information. Such targeted provision includes special support for
new entrants at five years, identified year 2 students, a senior boys’ class,
gifted and talented programmes, and target groups in each classroom.
Learning environments are attractively and purposefully
presented and appropriately resourced to assist student learning. In
addition to their homerooms, students have regular access to the information and
communication technologies (ICT) suite, well‑stocked library, hall and
technology block. The board
allocates resources for the staffing of the ICT and library areas to support
teachers and students in the use of tools and skills for carrying out inquiry
learning.
School values include individual student responsibility for
learning and progress. Teachers
encourage this through effective strategies, planned opportunities and timely
support. Students engage in
activities readily and speak positively about their learning experiences.
The school knows about student achievement in literacy from
good quality, well‑analysed assessment data. Overall,
the reading and writing results for 2007 show that Grey Main students have made
significant progress over time and perform well above the national means for the
tests used.
From internal review processes, the school has identified its
next areas for development. Teachers,
with the strong leadership of the principal, are working to raise student
performance in mathematics and are also preparing for full implementation of The New
Zealand Curriculum by 2010. Continued
implementation of action plans in these areas is likely to broaden the focus of
school improvement and foster the transfer of effective practices achieved in
literacy to teaching and learning across all subject areas.
Future Action
ERO is confident that the board of trustees can manage the
school in the interests of the students and the Crown and bring about the
improvements outlined in this report.
ERO is likely to review the school again as part of the
regular review cycle.
Review Coverage
ERO reviews do not cover every aspect of school performance
and each ERO report may cover different issues. The
aim is to provide information on aspects that are central to student achievement
and useful to this school.
If you would like a copy of the full report, please contact
